So transferring with TivoDecode seems to not have the same audio sync issues that Toast does. Running the file from TivoDecode through Visual Hub converts it to whatever you want, and even burns it to DVD. So a piece of freeware combined with a $20 converter does exactly what I bought the $99 Toast for, and unlike Toast, actually works.
