I don't believe any reasonably modern ThinkPad has had a stereo line-in on the internal audio. The combo headphone/headset jack on current models for sure cannot do stereo recording - it's a TRRS connector with ground, left, right, mic on the 4 contacts. I would recommend getting a USB audio interface for this purpose, yeah.
