FireWire Solo Mixer Software - What is "1/2 sw rtn ...

The "1/2 sw rtn" on the left. It's set to 5. I'm not sure what this is but I think it's just the output volume. At 50 the volume is off and at 0 it's the highest. The difference between 5 and 0 is minimal. I don't think it affects the recording but I'm not sure. I was able to record sound when it was at 50/off. It's always been set to 5.

(The far right hand meter) This will show you that windows is passing audio into the card. YES You could test by connecting a stereo line source to inputs 1/2 then change the spdif output setting from sw rtn to line 1/2in. Unfortunately, I do not have connectors for the 1/2 inputs. I used 3/4. The Mixer tab shows audio on Master and 3/4 In.

In the M-audio control panel do this: On the Hardware tab tick the box that says 'disable asio direct monitoring'. Goto the Mixer tab and mute all your inputs. On the Output tab select 'sw-rtn' for all your outputs. Now in Sonar simply select the audio track you want to record on, select your input, enable record AND the input echo.

Well, 1-2 ins and 3-4 ins didn't work with it either, and neither did sw rtn -- wtf? Why does it work with 3-4 out and not 1-2out? But fortunately 1-2 out has an additional setting: "mixer." And it works. Again, why, I'm wondering, do 1-2out get a "mixer" selection and 3-4out don't? So now I'm getting sound output from both 1-2 and 3-4.

The M-Audio stuff is servicable although the drivers are a bit quirky, still, I doubt your original problems were completely related to the FW410. One thing most people don't do is follow M-Audio's instructions to the "T". I would clean out M-Audio FW410 drivers, remove all folders related to M-Audio.
