It sounds like the STR-K900 is an "HDMI pass through" receiver. It does not process audio received via HDMI but passes throughthe audio and video to a TV/monitor. In order to get surround sound with this type of unit, a separate digital audio (coax or optical) connection is needed from the source to the receiver.
