Sterling Audio ST77 FET | RecordingHacks.com

    http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/Sterling/ST77
The Sterling ST77 is a large diaphragm FET condenser with a transformer-coupled output and a fixed Cardioid pickup pattern. Unlike most of the LDCs in the Sterling product line, the ST77 forgoes the company’s copy of Aspen Pittman’s “disk resonator” capsule, in favor of a standard single diaphragm — although heavier than is typical, at 8 microns.

The Sterling ST77 is a high-noise FET microphone with what appears to be a variation of the ADK A-51/MXL 2001 circuit. The mic has relatively high sensitivity, but like most Sterling mics, relatively high noise. The circuit offers insufficient and perhaps even unintentional high-frequency correction: -2dB @ 20kHZ.

Just wondering about the st77 b/c MF is closing it out for 199. A lot of people liked it for $499, but if it's similar to the 4040 in tone, then i wouldn't bother. ST77 is suposed to be nice on acoustic gtr, but the 4040 is great on acoustic too, so i'm not sure about getting one even at the close-out price.

Sterling ST77 ($199) The only reason I’m even considering this mic is because Guitar Center is selling it for $199 when it used to belike 500 or something. Apparently they are being discontinued. I’ve also heard good things about this mic, but I feel like a lot of people prefer the AT4040 over it still. Blue Spark ($199)

The ST77's self-noise of 18 dB is actually pretty high, given the fact that the Blue Bluebird, now $350, has less than 7.5 dB of self-noise, and the Shure KSM27 and KSM32 at $300 and $550, respectively, have self-noise of around 12-15 dB.
