If you purchased the game through Steam, simply add -dsound to the launch options. This just fixed my problem where the audio was balanced more to the left instead of being properly centered. Use the Unofficial 1.0008b patch. Fixes and properly restores EAX and Surround on modern systems.

For those of us who have surround sound capabilities you may be surprised to learn there is a fix to get surround sound working in Shadow of Chernobyl. OpenAL is the audio extension used by Shadow of Chernobyl, sadly the OpenAL32.dll defaults to a "Generic Software" driver instead of whatever else may be available in your system.

Worked for me, haven't checked my onboard Realtek but my AMD graphics card uses a modified version of the same Realtek hardware. Make sure your system is set to 5.1, 7.1 won't work and I assume 6.1 a won't either. First time I've managed to get true surround sound working in any Stalker game, and I spent ages on this with CoP. 1.
