For $1999 the Sony HAP-Z1ES supplies the computer, hard drive, DAC, and app to run it all. While this is a bit of a stretch, the HAP-Z1ES could be considered the iMac of HD music players—everything you need to acquire, store, and reproduce HD music files, regardless of format, in one carefully thought out and powerful box.

For years I have tried to find a decent hi-end, all in one, digital music playback system that does not require a computer or knowledge of computer networks. Sony's HAPZ1ES is that unit. It includes the following key components: 1) 1 TB Hard Disk drive: My library includes HD audio and CD quality audio totaling around 300GB and 6000 tracks. This means that I would need to triple …

The only hard-wired input is the aforementioned Ethernet connection, and the only outputs from the HAP-Z1ES player are analog. Located on the rear panel you’ll find a pair of balanced XLR and a pair of single-ended RCA outputs. If you are in need of digital outputs to connect to your DAC or AV receiver, the HPA-Z1ES won’t help you." Expand

Sony should've allowed the internal HDD to be access via USB so you can just hook a computer directly to the HAP and access it like it were an external USB HDD. After the initial setup and download. It's not bad doing the 2 or 3 albums I'll do from time to time.

I just bought a used Auralic Vega and connected it to my Sony HAP-Z1 today. Connected a USB cable from the Sony to the Vega and connected the Vega to my preamp. Turned on the Sony and Auralic, hit play on the Sony and beautiful sounds came out of the Vega. Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile

Compare to MW Sony HAP-Z1ES, it has more tube magic. I prefer a transparent, linear and neutral sound so rolling 60's Siemen e88cc signal tubes and Telefunken NOS GZ32 rectifier in my MW Sony. In my all tube system (ARC Ref250SE and VAC SigMKIIa SE), I prefer the more neutral and maybe a TOUCH more transparent (transformer coupling) MW Sony HAP ...

Just connect the external hard drive directly to the HAP and let hap boot up and wait. Logically no message will appear. Then shut it down and connect again the usb hub with the cd drive the hdd and the usb to dac. I think your problem will be solved. Don't forget to connect the power supply to the usb hub and to the cd drive. audio.bill 568
