Hi and welcome to AVF. If you've unearthed this ancient thread to find out why you might need to use the optical cable with a Sky receiver the answer is that the Sky HDMI socket outputs only stereo audio, so if you have an amplifier and want 5:1 audio when you're on a channel that provides it you need to make the optical connection and over-ride the HDMI.
