The 300D version 2 sounds as good as version 1 ; the main difference is in the USB input. Version 1's USB can't do hi-res. Version 2 does hi-res, but I was disappointed with the way it handled pacing via USB. UHF Magazine has reviews of both DACs, and both versions of the 300D. The 100D got a rave.

If your primary source will be USB, though, the 300D is probably not the best choice. Simaudio makes it very clear in their description of both the 100D and the 300D that they put their effort into the SPDIF circuits and include the USB input mostly as a convenience. mezmo 516 posts 03-16-2012 9:56am

that Simaudio is pushing sales of the 100D by a unique exchange offer: trade up to the 300D within a year and get all of your money back (or 75% in the second year). We had added the 100D to our Audiophile Store after a first listening session had confirmed that it was at least good enough that we could recommend it.

The Moon 100D is based on the Burr Brown PCM1793 high resolution 24-bit/192kHz D/A with an 8x oversampling digital filter. An asynchronous sample-rate converter upconverts all input signals to 24-bit/192kHz. As is Simaudio’s practice, a highly accurate digital clocking system maintains the DAC’s extremely low jitter levels.

performance of the 300D in a real-life system, not because of the 300D itself, but because of limitations in the source hardware and software. We expect those limitations to melt away. Simaudio told us that the 300D would need a whopping 300 hours of run-in time before delivering its full perfor-mance! We plugged it in, along with the

I'm also interested in the 100D or 300D. Too bad Sim doesn't have a 200D right smack in between those two units. $1,000 is a nice price point. Anyways, from all I've read there is a classic Simaudio house sound across many, if not all, of it's components. Well articulated bass, an open midrange, and extended highs. Something like that.
