We built these shorting plugs to help test noise levels in our products. If one measures the output noise of a preamplifier or power amplifier, for example, there’s a fairly significant difference between an open input connector feeding the amp and when the shorting plug is inserted. This is standard practice on live inputs.

If the selector switch is not switched to the input/s that you have the shorting plugs on, it is an open circuit, and a shorting plug should have no effect on an open circuit as it is not connected to in your case the Autoformer, and in an active preamps case, to the input stage transistors. Never put a shorting plug on the output of anything. They go on the un used inputs of a preamp or integrated amp. For example, if you have 4 inputs on your integrated amp and you only have a CD player and a tuner hooked up to it, you would short out the other two un used inputs so they don't pick up any noise. If you have a soldering iron it's easy. Just jumper pin #2 to pin #3. If you can't solder. Take an old XLR cable/with connector. Cut the cable so that it's 2 or 3 inches long. Strip some insulation off the cut end. Tightly twist the 2 signal wires together. Same with RCA's. Just take an old cable and modify it. M michael hurd Registered
