The idea that you need your tv to be on is only true for modern budget BD players that no longer have analogue outputs.

    IOW, with DVD-A and BD you need visual cues via your TV or projector. SACD is similar to a CD in that you don't need any visual cues. Sound wise, if the same master is used, they should all sound pretty much identical for a 5.1 mix. Of course, BD supports Atmos mixes which the others don't. BTW, even old DTS-CD 5.1 discs sound pretty good to me.
