You know if its the AE edition as will read AE Audio Edition on the top right hand corner of the player. There is definatley internal differences as descibed above by Arnold. Rotel UK actually sold both the 991 and 991AE at the same time when the original 991 was coming to an end in sales.

I bought a rotel 991 AE about three years ago and used it with really good results until a couple months ago when I replaced it with a Audio Research CD3. I still have the 991 although I will be selling it soon. When I was looking for a player I looked at every cdp at the 1000-1500 price range and researched them to the point of making me sick.

I've heard that the 991 has synergy with a rotel amp or preamp. I heard it was better than the 1070. I hear the 1072 is much improved, but haven't been able to compare either. I am was very happy with the 1070 when I had it. Rotel is great at their price point.
