Rogue Audio The Design Perseus offers an immediate visual impression – firstly how very thin or low profile the chassis is, and secondly, the elegantly arched protective cage covering the compliment of tubes. The unit stands deceptively 4 ½” high including the cage.

Clean, clear, inviting, inoffensive – that’s what Rogue’s after. And they are hitting their mark. Despite its hard exterior appearance, it is a very cuddly sounding preamp which wears well on the ears over the hours of listening. Lesser components show their weaknesses with older or poorer quality recordings.

The higher-end reach of the Perseus is limited, and it sounds like it’s been designed to be friendly as opposed to exacting. It seems that in lieu of edging beyond the warmth of tubes and stepping into solid-state clarity and stiffness, Rogue has chosen to let the vague haze of undefined sound rest just beyond reach, but not beyond sight.

Build quality is impressive; even the remote (which handles the Alps volume control) is a heavy, machined piece of metal. The phone section (through which I am feeding a Shure V15 xMR) is also dead quiet and provides the same wide soundstage, bass extension, and midrange and high end transparency I noticed using line-level inputs.

The following represents an early review of the Rogue Perseus, installed in my system last week. I have been using a good (Cary P-7) home theater preamplifier and wanted a tube preamplifier for two-channel listening.

Perseus presents Nat and the Trio with a full range – his voice is smooth yet throaty, forward, and airy. The instruments from Stuff Smith's violin, and Nat's piano playing are nicely articulated, alto sax, trumpet, and trombone sufficiently brassy. This is an accomplished ensemble. Perseus made this two-album LP so much fun!
