iPOD 5G: Rockbox has better sound quality | Headphone ...

I found instead a better SQ on Rockbox than the Apple firmware playing the same MP3-320kps files with volume set at 0db or 90% level, and EQ off. Rockbox has in comparison a clear, crisp and airy sound especailly in the mids and the highs, and a tighter bass. There is a clear indication that the SQ on Rockbox 5G can be further improved.

Rockbox generally doesn't give you better sound quality, but adds more support for different file types and also I believe a decent equalizer if that's what you're looking for as well as a few extra features. I have an iPod classic 160gb 7th gen and personally just bought a DAP.

iPod, Rockbox, FLAC - help me! :) | Steve Hoffman Music Forums

Hence, I opted for two music folders – once folder for FLAC files and one for mp3 files for the iPod on my computer.

The iPod nano definitely had better quality audio. It had a better bass response and was not so harsh in the high-end. So not all iPods are same. This got me wondering why. IT turns out that there are different audio chips used in different iPods. There are also different other parts, but I think the main difference comes from the Audio chips ...

Best ipod of all times?! : audiophile

The 5.5 is regarded as the best sounding (not to confuse with the 5th), although you need rockbox to get the best sound out of it and also use an external dac or amp that can get the sound from the 30-pin conector rather than the headphone jack, but even if you use the headphone jack and stock sw, it sounds great.
