THE MJR7-Mk5 LATERAL MOSFET CLASS-AB POWER AMPLIFIER. Tested at 4V into a 7R5 load to check for crossover effects the 1kHz distortion was mostly second harmonic under -120dB (0.0001%), achieved with only 100mA quiescent current. Power output is around 30W into 8ohms with a single 60V supply, or higher voltages can be used for up to about 100W.

I plan to delete the renardson-audio.com site eventually and just leave the 'free' Angelfire site as a permanent version. For now I am updating both sites. Dead links are a never ending problem. I still get occasional questions regarding circuit boards for the MJR7 amplifier, and a few years ago I did make and sell a few, but only about 30, the design has never been highly popular.

Choosing a single supply bypassing capacitor of a few uF with leads close together and as short as possible to minimise series inductance is my approach for most audio applications. Using the OPA2134, by adjusting the 220R in the twin-T the 3rd harmonic could be reduced to -120dB relative to the 1kHz fundamental, but the 2nd harmonic changed ...

The same problem was treated by Douglas Self in his articles "Thermal dynamics in audio power" in Electronics World, Part 1, May 1996, p410-415 and Part 2, June 1996, p481-486. The second remaining problem is how to match the temperature coefficients of the Vbe multiplier transistor and the output stage transistors.

Thanks for the comments Mike. I just looked again at the sim. Iq is 93mA, I could make it nearer 100mA by adjusting the bias chain a bit, but I suspect it will not make much difference. WRT the layout: the distortion is very similar for both channels i.e. the one that is close to the smoothing...

Faced with restoring or modding a vintage Dynaco SCA-80Q, I found Michael Renardson's single-rail, ultra-low distortion design. Mike provided the board with all components except the large electrolytics and the MOSFETs, which I sourced from MCM Electronics. A fun build. I choose to bypass the Dynaco's primitive preamp, as well, and go passive.
