Apr 11, 2013. #2. Personally I think the differences between those DAC's will be negligible, but considering what I've read about those DAC's, the general consensus so to say is that the Rega DAC is the more warm, fluid and analogue sounding DAC, the Audiolab the more analytical and detailed, some would say bright DAC.

Audiolab M- DAC versus Rega DAC - theartofsound.net

I'm gone. I've heard the Audiolab MDAC and the Rega DAC. I found the Rega to be pretty much neutral tonally, and an enjoyable listen. With the Audiolab MDAC I hear a bit of a treble emphasis and some grain, too, it gets a bit insistent and annoying after a while to my ears. Excellent dynamics and bass though, and the mids are clear and lucid.

I've recently swapped out my Rega DAC and Rega Brio-R for the Audiolab MDAC and 8200P Power Amp. My speakers are Monitor Audio RX1s. I did enjoy the sound from my Rega DAC, but I felt some detail was missing and was curious if I could achieve a larger soundstage - which is when I started looking into the MDAC seriously.

As part of IAG, Audiolab once again produce high quality hifi at affordable prices. When unpacking the M-DAC+ one immediately notices the weight and the structural integrity. I'd look at the Rega or the V-DAC with upgraded power supply. The m-dac, if its like the CD player, is going to be for those who like taut, detailed but ultimately a tad thin sound, whereas the V-DAC in its upgraded form just plays the music without trying to embellish.

Sound quality. It wasn’t until the arrival of the Audiolab M-DAC in 2011 that cash-strapped audiophiles had a genuinely flexible yet fine-sounding DAC. It was so good at its £600 price point that it turned the market upside down. The new M-DAC+ doesn’t do this – think of it as a brilliant refinement, rather than the reinvention of the hi ...
