For posterity, here is the exact procedure I followed immediately prior to getting working spdif out: Start with Apple native AppleHDA.kext in /S/L/E. Use Multibeast 9.1.0 to install ALC887/888b and 100 / 200 Series Audio patches. Copy resulting AppleHDA.kext to desktop.

I have a Asus P8Z77-M mainbord with realtek alc877 onboard solution which also has 1 optical out spdif. with windows 10 this optical output is Always on , and it should be off (isn't used anyway). it never was on in windows 8/8.1 . disabling the digital output in device manager does not disable the optical output. the light stays on.
