Realtek simply says "You just unplugged a device from the audio jack" when I plug the mic in. 3. The default sound device is the speakers, plugged into the motherboard at the rear. Plugging the mic into the back works fine, but this is impractical as to plug in the headset's headphones, I have to unplug the speakers.

Could be a flakey front panel headphone jack, the cable that connects the front panel headphone/mic jacks to the motherboard, etc. Reseat the audio cable connector (unplug then plug back in) at the motherboard and see if that helps. If not, remove the cable and see if it still reports the headphone jack problem.
