It's a JSI JS4127 (cheap player) using a coaxial output. I was testing with Batman Begins. Anyway, I figured out that in RAW it was louder but much more distorted. It was also in just dolby digital. In PCM, the volume is lower but sounds much cleaner and uses dolby pro logic. The sub isn't as loud as I'd like it to be though.

As you rightly mentioned, the application is dictates whether the data is raw/unchanged (bitstream) or whether it's converted and then send onto the Windows High Def Audio device.
