Hi, I'm trying to edit a .m4v video (H.264 video codec, AC3 (a52) audio codec) in iMovie '11 on MBP 13. The sound does not work. However, I can hear sound in quicktime player and VLC. But I thought that when qt works, iMovie works. Unfortunately, it doesn't. In my other MBP 17 the same video works fine - I can hear sound in iMovie '11.

FYI, that AC3 codec doesn't work with QuickTime 7.0.2 (possibly 7.0 and up). I wish it did, but until Apple decides to address this issue we are stuck with VLC or trancoding the AC3 to AAC (losing the surround sound).

If you want QuickTime to recognize and play Dolby AC3 encoded audio from movies, copy the AC3MovieImport component into the /Library/QuickTime folder as well. This definitely won’t hurt and you’ll probably enjoy it later.

My knowledge are limit but I think Quicktime 7 can't itself play AC3, Apple DVD Player can do it because have the components to do it, so you can hear AC3 audio on your DVD, I don't know if there is some kind of plugin in order to get AC3 working on QT (I use A.Pack, mpeg2works 4 and FFMPEGX to convert audio to AC3 all the time and never hear about …

I have QTpro and I was wondering if there was a way to take the 5.1 audio from a quicktime file and create a 5.1 ac3 file for use in DVDlab. I've been using AC3Machine to encode exported waves fro the QT files, but it encodes it for DD 2.0.
