Les Mis follows convict-turned-saint Jean Valjean as he raises the orphan Cosette and evades police inspector Javert. An act of mercy by Monseigneur Bienvenu, an exemplary bishop, sets Jean Valjean on the path of righteousness: this scene is one of the most powerful I have ever encountered in all of fiction.

The narration was excellent here too. It's true that the audio quality is lacking, but I listened in my car with the bass turned all the way down and it sounded just fine. That said, I'm not sure that Les Miz is really worth ~68 hours of listening time. Granted, this is a classic, but it's not a very readable (or listen-able) one.

So I finally finished Les Miserables. It took me five months to listen to the whole thing, a 60-hour audio book. There were several points where I nearly gave up, and one where I actually announced on Facebook that I had given up. But I went back to it and I'm ever so glad that I did. Let me start by saying that this is a fantastic book.

Where does Les Miserables rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far? This BBC production is probably the best audio dramatization of Victor Hugo's novel. I have Orson Welles Mercury Theater version, which I love, the Focus On The Family version starring Brian Blessed, which is also quite good, but this adaptation takes more time ...

Les Miserables is set in Paris after the French Revolution. In the sewers and back streets we encounter "the wolf-like tread of crime," and assassination for a few sous is all in a day's work. We weep with the unlucky and heartbroken Fantine, and exult with the heroic revolutionaries of the barricades; but above all we thrill to the steadfast courage and nobility of soul of ex-convict …

Les Miserables Audio CD – Audiobook, March 15, 2012 . by ... I feel the same way about Les Miserables. There are times when Hugo spends chapters--page after page after page--describing, defining, and providing back story--some of which has its own interesting anecdotes, metaphors, or simile, but that doesn't seem germane to anything that came ...

As for the story itself, Les Miserables is simply one of the greatest stories ever told. Victor Hugo had his faults as a writer (he had a tendency to waffle aimlessly, get certain facts wrong and characterise his characters very basicly) but the story he told in the 1,000+ pages of Les Miserables is captivating and ultimately timeless.
