The workaround is to stop all instances of pulseaudio, namely user's daemon and GDM's daemon (I only found one way - "for i in {0..50}; do sudo killall pulseaduio" - otherwise GDM will restart, also changing config param autostart=no does not take effect and service still gets restarted), then plug the interface, then logout/login to recover pulseaudio.
