I avoid pulseaudio like the plague (or Metro UI). When I had to do skype work, I got rid of pulse, and stuck strictly with ALSA - they don't always play nice together.

I'm running 64-bit Arch Linux on kernel v5.05.5, using xmonad as my window manager (not a complete desktop environment.) I have pulseaudio running, and I'm using a bluetooth speaker with other applications (tested with cmus,) but this device does not show in Skype under Audio & Video Settings. Instead, only my ALSA devices show.

I see some positive aspects in Skype's present dependency on Pulseaudio, too. Maybe, other Linux users now start looking for Skype alternatives, too. As I could achieve this only by using PulseAudio, I installed and configured it. Now, I can easily switch from using the remote server and the local one with pax11publish. However, now, neither VLC nor Skype makes any sound, although the issues may be different, because skype does produce sound when I use the remote server, while VLC never does.

The sound quality is awful, Skype is useless with it. If I kill the pulseaudio process, everything is back to normal, works normals, Skype is working flawlessly. I tried to disable it by uncommenting autospawn = no in /etc/pulse/client.conf and do the same in ~/.pulse/client.conf
