Alsa-base is deprecated, so I can't re-install it. I tried purging and re-installing Pulseaudio, but that did not fix the problem.

But as of 11.10, when I start /usr/bin/pulseaudio, I've got no more sound. On Debian 9 and i3/LXQT I installed the packages alsa-firmware-loaders, alsamixergui, alsaplayer-oss, alsa-utils, alsa-tools and alsa-tools-gui, but this was probably overkill. Then I just used alsamixergui to turn on the Master Volume (make also sure that the speaker icons above it are 'turned on', if you see them) and the appropriate speakers.

Then on the Output Devices tab, you should have available something like HDMI/DisplayPort. Click on the check mark next to this selection to set it as default.
