UPDATE: people in #pulseaudio on irc.freenode.net say it could be a bug in the alsa driver that makes pulseaudio keep rewinding the stream, eating the CPU in a realtime thread, which then gets killed by the kernel for exceeding cputime limits. The PulseAudio API is not going to be deprecated either. You can say it is dying for some time already. It is developed basically by volunteers in their spare time (same story with jack). While it is problematic on its own, this also means project lacks capacity to incorporate external changes.
