Transcoding is necessary on the fly so the PS3 can play the songs. These media servers take the FLAC file and convert it on the fly to PCM which the PS3 sees without a problem. The reason I use Fuppes is because it is the only streaming software I have found that works near perfectly under linux which my server runs.

The PS3 could be a fantastic media streamer if Sony weren't such tyrants. I had an HTPC for several years but got tired of all the fiddling involved and settled on the NeoTV 550 from Netgear. Most of the media streamers will play an amazing amount of filetypes but the NeoTV does gapless audio.
