Only show this user. You need to use the HDMI connection to get the lossless audio formats from BD/PS3. With the optical cable you will only get the "core" audio formats such as are standard on DVD. Also, to get the 1024p video from the PS3 you need to use the HDMI cable anyway, plus you need one for your TV.

Loving my PS3 so far - it's currently connected up to my TV (JVC 32DX7) via HDMI. However, I have a digital receiver (JVC RX D701) which supports audio via both optical and HDMI and also provides HDMI picture passthrough to my TV.

Correction, Looks like my tv DOESN'T have an Optical like I previously thought, it does however have a Digital in and out ports. So the question(s) now is, should I just use the PS3's HDMI audio or use the PS3's Optical instead? also, I am currently configured to use the HDMI audio but the sound comes out the TV, as well as the Surround, should I just mute the TV, is …

I do the opposite - I use HDMI routed into a receiver for my audio, but I use Component cables fed into my HDTV for the visuals. I do this to eliminate the possibility of input lag when playing frame rate technical games on the PS3 like Virtua Fighter 5 ands Tekken 5: DR while still being able to hear the best quality sounds on Blu-ray movies and games like …

PS3 optical sound problem solved! | AVForums

For the PS3 by default it looks for the sound via HDMI, even if you've set your PS3 to send the sound by optical. You then have to tell it to prioritise optical, and you get your sound. I think a similar situation could exist for people connecting their PS3 by component but wanting the sound via optical (i.e. by default it will look for the sound on the component connection, unless …

The basics. Both HDMI and optical pass digital audio from one device to another. Both are better than analog (the red and white cables). Both can pass multi-channel audio, like Dolby Digital. Both cables can be had pretty cheap. The biggest difference is that HDMI can pass higher-resolution audio, including the formats found on Blu-ray: Dolby ...
