The PS3 can only decode the HD Audio and pass it out as LPCM, so you amp will not see the Audio output from the PS3 as an HD Audio signal (for example DTS-MA), just a 5.1 uncompressed PCM stream. THe PS3 internally decodes TrueHD to PCM. Bit for bit it is the same, identical. It will sound the same. Starting on April 15th, the latest upgrade to the PS3 will allow it to do the same with DTS-HD MA.

you MUST send the sound using PCM from the ps3 to the receiver as the ps3 decodes it. Then you must have the receiver set to multi channel PCM or something similar. You will not see True HD or DTS-HD lite up on the receiver, but you will hear the difference.

My understanding is that I need something that will accept HDMI audio in and transmit that to connected speakers/sub. Correct, however you don't need full HD decoding on an AVR as the PS3 can not bitstream the HD audio to an AVR, instead the PS3 decodes the HD audio and sends it as uncompressed multi-channel PCM over HDMI.

Sony has still not provided the latest technology for lossless audio ( Dolby True HD and DTS HD) on the PS3. Soon the new Blu Ray Dvd’s will have the above 2 formats included and the only audio PS3 can decode at this moment is Dolby Digital 5.1. Truly amazing that a highly advanced gaming system still lacks the latest in sound technology.

go with hdmi for the hd audio, i just got a ps3 as well , my reciever cant decode hd audio but i found out if you set your ps3 to send oudio out by pcm it does all the decoding and you will get a true 7.1 hd sound to your reciever. it can only do this through hdmi.
