I can say, however, that the correct audio setting on the PS3 if you are running audio through an HDMI cable is Linear PCM (LPCM) to take advantage of all the sound that the HDMI output is capable of delivering to your HDMI receiver (even 1.1 works fine with the new audio codecs when the player does the decoding - no need for 1.3). My conclusion from this is that depending on what equipment you have your PS3 connected to, the "auto" audio setting may or may not work. To play it safe, switch to "manual" in the PS3 audio menu and check off all the codecs you might encounter. That should do the trick if your situation was in any way related to mine. The settings on the PS3 are optical out, set to bitstream and on Audio out - Dolby Digital, DTS and all of the PCMs (except middle two) are checked on audio settings (same settings on my PS3). On the Panasonic the system is set to DI, and then on PCM Fix the OFF option is selected.
