The UltraLink Two's maximum output level from the balanced jacks was a lowish 3.15V (balanced) and 1.58V (unbalanced). These low output levels we're starting to see in digital processors are caused by the 6dB of attenuation required in HDCD-equipped processors when decoding standard CDs (including test discs).

After extensive listening over a week's time, I wound up buying the PS Audio Lambda and the Theta Cobalt. After six months of searching, I found a PS Audio Ultralink II (non-HDCD). After listening to all of this I came to the following conclusions: 1. Bits are not bits. ANY combination beat out the Sony mid-fi player quite handily.

On the front panel, there is a led for HDCD which I think it will light up when the CD is HDCD. I just tried a HDCD CD but it didn't light up. The user manual didn't mention this feature either. You can call PS Audio for the answer.
