PS Audio has been such a company. Their new 4.6 preamp, an update and cosmetic clone of the earlier, well-received 4.5, is not at the top of their preamp range—that honor belongs to the 5.5—but it is clearly designed to be more than a price-point product. The design characteristics and features of the 4.6 follow those of the 4.5 closely.

The PS Audio 4.6 has one phono onput that is internally switchable between MM and MC cartridges. It has two tape inputs, one tuner input and one CD input. That is the extent of the devices that the 4.6 supports. Like the Carver, it also has two external outputs for separate amps. Unlike most preamps, the 4.6 has no tone controls.

With recordings having more robust high-frequency content, the 4.6 did reveal a trace of brightness, a slightly "electronic" tinge. But it was well-controlled and not a serious flaw, certainly not in a "budget" preamp, and my other impressions continued unchanged.

The PS Audio 4.6 was a great preamplifier - I never had one, but owned the predecessor, the 4.5. This gear was made to last - I still own a vintage PS Audio Ultralink DAC using the Ultranalog chips and performs as new! Enjoy it.

The 4.6 is built very well, is very flexible, and sounds great something the competition will be hard pressed to equal or beat. If you currently own a 4.5, PS Audio will upgrade your unit for $100. If you're in the market for a new preamplifier, I suggest you listen to the 4.6 before buying any thing else. --Gary Krakow -----------

Nice build and good quality components throughout, so if the 4.6 has been properly used there's nothing to worry about. I partly agree with Eldartford: phonostage is good, and IMHO the MC part isn't half bad. Although the phonostage in my …
