When I add a video to my PP, I will preview the video (in edit mode) and the visual portion of the video will stop playing while the audio continues; all I see is the background of the slide. When I attempt to play the slide show, I continue to only hear the audio and not see the video. The only way to temporarily fix this is to completely quit PP and restart it.

If you can tweak the settings, produce WMV videos (with WMV9 codec, not the older WMV7) or MP4 videos (with H.264 codec) and use those for PowerPoint. If you cannot influence the recording directly, convert them to WMV (or MP4) before using them in presentations. (I use AVS Video Converter for this, it's not free, but works well.) Best, Ute
