I tried unplugging the HDMI cable form the TV and the sound came back on. It seems to me for some reason the TV thinks the 8800GT is outputting audio and is hence muting the 3.5mm input. To make matters worse the TV doesn't have an option to force the use of the 3.5mm input so I'm stuck with blank HDMI audio coming from the 8800 GT.

I have plugged hdmi cable from pc to tv and picture is fine. In nvidia control panel there is a setup digital audio option it detects my vga caed and i can select sound turn off or LG tv. so there is a bright spot at the end of the tunnel. In sound/playback only speaker and spdif out appears. i have checked disabled and disconnected devices.

AFAIK in nvidialand, only the 8800gt can output 5.1 audio over the HDMI connection. The question of how or if was raised in another thread and there is no confirmation eitherway yet. Since the POV 8400gs comes with an optional hdmi dongle, im going to go out on a limb and say it is for spdif passthrough for hdmi (if you can get the dongle). Just remember, don't use the 5v power pin on the motherboard/audio card on that. just use the signal and ground pins, though I don't which one is which on that card.
