It was the best bang for the buck in 1994. My understanding is that performed similarly to $1000+ players of the day (I only had a playstation, no $1000 cd player, so I do not speak from personal experience). But CD players and DACs have come a long way in 35+ years. The SCPH-1001 is no longer the giant-killer it used to be.
