Just because a mini-jack is digital does not mean it can support multi-channel sound beyond 2.0. I don't even think it supports 2.1 sound. a DVD (played with Apple's DVD Player or VLC) should be able to send 5.1 AC-3 digital optical audio through the optical min-jack. You're absolutely right Malcolm.
