and apologies for not making it clearer. The wii works fine going through the tv and then the TVs optical out. The splitter however just won't work, there's a dim red light coming from the tvs optical cable but nothing from the ps3. The splitter box definately looks like the right solution so I'm going to order one. Thank you again

A splitter does cut the optical power in half. It sounds like the detectors in the receivers may no longer be able to work from the half-power output. That's all I can think of. Maybe there are such things as active splitters rather than passive ones. That might be a solution.
