I am very impressed with the Consonance cd120 linear, however it takes a good burn in around 200- 300 hrs and it keeps improving. It is smooth, detailed, very musical and analogue sounding (natural and warm) with plenty of 3D soundstage depth, atmospheric, quite dynamic, rich and sweet.

The $1200 CD120 features a Philips VAM1202 drive mechanism and 24-bit/192kHz multilevel sigma-delta upsampling. As with its big brother, the 2.2, this processing comes courtesy of the multi-bit Crystal CS4396 DAC. The unit upsamples all material to 192kHz but does not support HDCD decoding. It will play homebrew CD-Rs.

Now to the Consonance CD-120 Linear. Its a beautiful unit in an understated way. All brushed aluminum with six buttons, three vertically arrayed on either side of the drawer and display and that's it. Even the product description: 'cd 120 linear high-end compact disc player' is printed on the lower right in very small lettering. Nice.

Opera Audio Consonance CD-120 Linear ($995). Made in China. We all know what that means. That’s right — quality. What’d you think I was going to say? At long last companies such as Prima Luna, Hyperion Sound and Opera Audio are proving that’s what that once ignominious phrase should mean to us audiophiles.
