Try another HDMI cable if possible. On the Onkyo, be sure that the blu-ray input has HDMI (1 or 2) as its primary input. Just as a test, bypass the receiver completely and attach the player directly to the television via HDMI. Hello, I can't seem to make the optical audio from Apple TV work with my Onkyo Receiver TX-SR501. The Onkyo has 2 optical audio lines in in the back. When I hit the "digital input" button on the front of receiver, I can select from OPT1, OPT2, or COAX. I currently have the optical audio line going into OPT2, but if I select OPT2, I hear no sound.

If I were you I would run everything through the Onkyo 605 as it is a great piece of equipment and it will in fact let you take full advantage of HD audio which you cannot do without using HDMI for audio as optical cannot handle the bandwidth load.
