Presently, no HDMI 1.3 or 1.2 (Oppo 980) cable is more than six feet. I’ve used 27 or 28ft out of my Onkyo to a projector and had fine results, apart from the “when the FPJ ain’t on the sound cuts out periodically”, aspect which I’m trying to address here. My PRIOR TO HDMI, Sony HT rec has yet one more issue….

If its always HDMI devices going in/out, do check if the 509 also has been known to have issues with HDMI. I recall years ago it was audio going in/out, then one day it all went black. Not saying that's what happening to you, but if you're unfamiliar with the Onkyo HDMI issues it's worth searching and reading up on.

I have had this receiver for about a year and I like the sound quality. However I do get a dropout of picture and sound for a few seconds; the display on receiver goes blank, then it is ok again. Does not happen on PS3, just Sky and STB/DVR inputs. There are issues with hdmi on Onkyo receivers...

I use HDMI throughout. The Onkyo receiver is an HT-RC260, no firmware updates available for this model from Onkyo's website. The audio dropout is not repeated when watching live TV and I rewind the show back to the point of the original dropout, which leads me to believe this is an Onkyo receiver problem.
