I record music. I thought I'd need a sound card, nope. Really high quality. Great speakers is a must, I highly recommend Bose c5 if you can muster the cash, the c20's are nice too but I like a bit more surround. Headphone quality is huge too, match up a pair of senheiser 500s 7.1 surround and it's pretty damn close to perfection.

Going from onboard audio to a stand alone sound card is an improvement if you get a good one. The onboard cards usually suck with settings as well. Not much more in my opinion though, I don't believe noise really factors into anything noticeable. Especially if you use a digital output to a stand alone DAC. Mar 25, 2010 at 4:11 PM Post #3 of 19

I can't find any detailed reviews of the quality of the onboard sound for the new Gigtabyte and Abit boards. They are listed as having: Gigabyte: Realtek ALC889A Abit: Realtek ALC888 I'm wondering if the onboard sound is now of sufficient quality to use it, or it a dedicated sound card improves the quality and FPS during gaming.

The ALC1220 by itself is an audio processing codec. What it does is processes the digital audio, and converts it to analog - although, some boards may feature ALC1220 + separate DAC chip, for higher quality - not Gaming 3 from what I've seen. The point is - what you've described with the sound is a result of a subpar amplifier, not ALC887 or ...
