    Which X-Fi sound card are you using? Also when your outputing HDMI (digital audio) to the monitor, your using the monitors built in DACs, which I doubt are as good as the DAC in the X-fi. So I would guess 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable from the X-Fi to the monitor would be the best sound quality.
