So bitstreaming is usually enough. My arguement still stands that Nvidia makes cards for a market driven by gaming. For them to add audio to the cards, and then take away surround sound for gaming is BS IMO. Adding the bitstreaming AC3 filter chain would cost nothing but manhours. (and I would pay for that software.

Nvidia GPUs cannot bitstream audio. They only output in PCM. Perhaps there is a third party application that forces the change permanently across the whole PC. There is no option in the Nvidia control panel that allows one to change between PCM and bitstream.

Yes all recent nvidia and AMD cards from 4+ years will support bitstream hd audio on the HDMI output just need to setup Windows and video player to use this feature

This post relates to issues when bitstreaming from HTPC via HDMI to an AV Reciever with an Nvidia GPU handling the audio via HDMI. Nvidia driver later than 355.60 does not work (at least up to 368.22 where I had issues, but likely also after that) Previously this year both Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD had been working for me.
