Replying to VBoxHarry: . XP-SP2-x64. If that's your host, WinXP stopped being supported with the 4.3.x series (see the footnote at the end of the page). And the 64-bit version? That's a rare one, which only adds weight to the non-supported status. But we can't know since you didn't attach a ZIPPED VBox.log as instructed.

DirectSound audio driver fails to initialize ... - VirtualBox

See attached screenshots and logs. The logs don't seem to tell me much that's useful except for that it failed to attach to the driver (line 607). Windows DirectSound is the only host audio driver available to me besides null, and changing the Audio Controller didn't change the situation at all.

Shut down the VM (in case the original virtualbox image has audio disabled), and configure the VM to enable audio and use DirectSound vagrant up again. Audio should work. Instead it is automatically changing the VM on boot to reset the audio driver to null. However if you vagrant halt, enable audio and start it from the virtualbox gui, audio works.
