FWIW, our CBS affiliate, KPIX, here in the Bay Area seems to broadcast evening shows in 5.1 most, if not all of the time. Audio is clearly defined thru all of the speakers with the "atmosphere" readily apparent in the side speakers. However, it does seem to vary from commercial to commercial if that's meaningful.
