The options you have for BD sound are LPCM and bitstream. LPCM means the PS3 decodes the audio and sends it over to the Home Cinema. Bitstream means the PS3 send the audio straight over for the Home Cinema to decode. If it is an HD audio signal and its set to optical then it might not work as the optical does not have the bandwidth for it ...

Most of the PS3 games provide 7.1 sound and the Blu-ray discs pass through what's on the discs as full channel PCM sound. When using HDMI for audio as well as for video you want to select "PCM" as your audio choice. There's even a warning in the PS3 setup menu that if you choose "bitstream" you may not get all of the sound.

The PS3 is new and I use it almost exclusively as a DVD / Blu-Ray player at this stage. I have encountered a problem with some of the audio tracks on animated DVD's played on this player. The most recent one was Ratatloile, where you could hear the thoughts of the characters, but not the spoken voices.
