I'm posting my fix here because I was unable to find it in other threads, most people suggested new HDMI cables. The problem for me was two fold. 1. Open the Menu. Go to Initial Setup, Input Settings, Output select. Set Output select to "fixed". If it is set to variable, the audio menus are greyed out. 2. Go to Audio Settings.

Go into the menu of the sharp, over to audio (or sound) and turn off HDMI audio. This should make the TV default to analog audio for that input. Or you may have to tell the sharp you using a DVI cable in the video menu which would make the TV default to the correct audio input. If this doesn't work try a different brand 3.5mm to RCA adaptor.
