I have a fresh new Squeeze installation (Debian 6.0.4) with all available updates installed. Before that I used Debian Lenny. In Debian Lenny I could hear sound well. In Debian Squeeze sound output is very very quiet. I can hear sound if I put the volume of my stereo amplifier to a very high volume, but sound is very very quiet.

In my Debian Squeeze installation I was first confronted with the fact that /proc/asound/cards listed both sound devices, and the HDA Intel onboard sound device was the default device. Note that I want to use the Soundblaster 5.1 Live card for sound generation, not the HDA intel onboard sound device.

On Debian 9 and i3/LXQT I installed the packages alsa-firmware-loaders, alsamixergui, alsaplayer-oss, alsa-utils, alsa-tools and alsa-tools-gui, but this was probably overkill. Then I just used alsamixergui to turn on the Master Volume (make also sure that the speaker icons above it are 'turned on', if you see them) and the appropriate speakers.

I installed Debian on a VM, only one sound card detected and it works just fine. However, in Alsamixer, the master volume was on mute (MM), so no sound would play from the speakers. Hit M when the volume control is selected and you unmute it. To test it, run the following command: Code: Select all Expand view.
