I get KDE audio back, and only KDE audio. Amarok plays my music only because I installed the necessary plugins from AlienBob's packages (gst-plugins-bad and gst-plugins-ugly). But I have no sound whatsoever in any other app, including VLC, MPlayer, audacious, flash in Firefox, and even pidgin notification sounds. So phonon-gstreamer is a NO-GO.

No sound in KDE. Here's an interesting KDE sound problem that recently started. Sometime in the last week or so, I have lost the various KDE sound notifications, you would hear at KDE startup, shutdown, console closed, etc. The sound notifications are set when checked in the KDE control panel.

KDE 4 uses the wrong sound device. That is not an error, but a configuration issue. To tell KDE 4 which soundcard to use (or prefer if available), open System Settings and go to Multimedia in the General tab. Devices from /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc are not listed.
