We think that maybe any adapter you may be using is not passing the Audio properly. He updated his External iSight to Firmware version 1.0.3 which was available some time ago in Tiger and Leopard as a Standalone but was also triggered by Software Update if the iSight was plugged in. The Standalone Firmware update in not in Snow Leopard.

I've intermittently had no sound in iChat, ever since the 10.4.4 update. Sometimes I get it working for a while, and then it goes again. Sometimes I can get speech sounds to work when the alert sounds aren't working.

iSight - no audio out: iChat can select from any audio-in source you have. So, if you can't be heard, but can be seen, change the audio source in iChat's video preferences. Some have reported that from time to time the microphone in their iSight is no longer recognized and that they must unplug and plug back in the iSight.

The only other drawback is that iChat AV only works with AOL and .mac accounts. No chatting with friends who have Yahoo or MSN Messenger accounts, something Apple should consider adding in the future. It would also be nice if iChat AV allowed you to voice chat and video chat with people who aren't using iChat AV.
