The TV tells the Xbox to only allow PC-like display options if it's set to auto-detect the display settings. To fix this: Open the options on the Xbox Main Screen ; Right until you get to Settings; Select Console Settings → Display Discovery; Turn the auto display discovery to Off; It will ask you to reset your TV and Xbox, after which you should have sound.

Have you tried resetting the video / audio settings on the Xbox? If not try doing this. Turn off the console and restart it using the controller. During start up hit "Y" and the Right Trigger at the same time. Do this until the console restarts.

If that doesnt work here's a link to the page https://support.xbox.com/en-AU/xbox-360/connections/connect-sound-system. Go down to Original Xbox system(I know it's not), there is a connector there. Issue is, you have to buy another HDMI cable with it. It's called a HDMI audio adaptor for Xbox. Look like you can find them online without the cable though.
